The City Council approved the Coast Hwy vision plan in April 2019 to create a more walkable and bikeable roadway along the City’s major north/south arterial. The approved plan reduces the travel lanes from four to two and added a 5 foot 3 foot buffered bike lane the entire length of the roadway from Vista Way to tabor Drive.
The City is currently analyzing the traffic element of the Coast Highway Vision Plan. A steering committee of local residents has been formed to recommend the highway configuration. We need to ensure the selected option ensures that all users can use this important thoroughfare. Configuration options range from keeping the highway as it is currently to having one travel lanes north and south with Class 2 bike lanes with 3 foot buffers. Replacing the signalized intersections with roundabouts is also an option.
Our committee strongly supports reducing the lanes from four to two with roundabouts. This configuration will provide enough room for bike lanes and wider sidewalks. We need to have our option heard by the Council. A short e-mail to council would be appropriate. Go to the web page header “Contacts” for Council e-mail address.
